8 p.m. news broadcast on July 3, 2023: France 2 issued a warning
Arcom was alerted to a segment on the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of young Nahel, shown on France 2's 8pm news broadcast on July 3, 2023.
The Authority noted that the subject shown was illustrated by a video of the young man's arrest, whose subtitles, wrongly stamped with the name of a non-governmental organization (NGO), actually corresponded to the version of events supported by the General Inspectorate of the National Police.
These elements therefore appear likely to characterize a breach of the provisions of article 35 of France Télévisions' specifications and article 1 of the deliberation of April 18, 2018 relating to the requirements of honesty and rigor in the presentation and processing of information.
Furthermore, considering that during the same newscast, uncertain information relating to the same case was shown, presented as testifying to the progress of the investigation when no official conclusion had been made public, Arcom summoned the publisher to evidence, in the future, greater vigilance regarding the use of the conditional when the information delivered is uncertain, a fortiori when the subject evoked is, as in this case, of particular sensitivity.
