Arcom has published a study on the relationship between the French and information, based on a representative sample of 3,400 French people aged 15 and over.

The French have a close relationship with information: 94% say they are interested in information , and the same proportion keep themselves informed on a daily basis.

The Arcom study reveals that the French feel fairly well informed on the subjects that interest them: society, culture, sport, the environment and politics. They seek information to connect with reality (to understand the world and its challenges) and to connect with others (to debate and discuss), so that they can freely form their own opinions.

Despite this interest, information overload leads a majority of them to adopt avoidance behaviors (changing TV channel or radio station, suspending app notifications). The rapid expansion of social networks and video platforms has made it easier for the French to access and appropriate information directly, even if editorialized media - first and foremost television and radio - are still the most popular.

However, the French are not fooled by the risks associated with algorithmic media (misinformation, manipulation of information, online hate), and express strong fears about them, without always being able to protect themselves.

Finally, the general tendency remains to become more informed, driven by dense news coverage, ever-available information (smartphone), and the need expressed by some to diversify their sources.
