The spread of false information on social networks raises major democratic challenges. The study sheds light on the phenomena and mechanisms of propagation and correction of false information on the Twitter platform.

The use of social networks for information is growing in France.

The French now get almost as much information online (69%) as they do via television (71%). More specifically, the use of social networks for information reached 42% in 2019.

The French regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication guarantees freedom of communication, in the public interest and in consultation with industry professionals. The law on combating the manipulation of information of December 22, 2018 entrusts it with new powers aimed at addressing some of the challenges for democracy that have emerged in the digital universe.

Drawing on quantitative and qualitative analyses, this study sheds light on the mechanisms for spreading and correcting false information on a popular social network, Twitter.

This work enriches Arcom's knowledge in the exercise of its missions, and bears witness to its growing technical expertise in data processing tools and methods. It also aims to contribute to a better understanding of the phenomena of false information diffusion by the general public and the public sphere.
