Study - Online cultural practices of 8-14 year-olds
8-14 year-olds and unlawful practices: a parental issue.
The qualitative study carried out in 2017 by Hadopi among 8-14 year-olds highlighted the importance of online practices from the youngest age, and the need for Hadopi to take an interest in them to better understand their development. This new quantitative study shows that among youngsters, online cultural practices are still very much centered on YouTube. They become more complex and diversified over time, as children become more autonomous and agile.
Almost all children aged 8 to 14 are involved in online cultural practices, whether legal or unlawful (13% of them). Family and friends, and parents in particular, play a major prescriptive role in the sites used by children, including illegal sites. Children whose parents resort to unlawful practices are three times more likely to do so themselves, confirming the importance of addressing parents and children to promote responsible online use.
