The trends observed in recent years continue into the second half of 2023. The level of equipment in France seems to be reaching maturity overall, except for smart TV equipment , which continues to increase. The rollout of IPTV television reception is also continuing across the country, giving the French access to a wider range of linear and on-demand digital video and audio services.
Audiovisuel equipment
On average, households now have 5.8 screens on which to watch videos, a rate that has remained stable since 2021. Televisions (90%) and smartphones (89.1%) are the most widespread equipment in the household, ahead of computers (86.9%) and touchscreen tablets (47.4%).
Youngsters, those from higher socio-professional categories and those living in large conurbations are the most represented among households not equipped with a TV set. A profile mirroring those households most equipped with a TV: inactive or lower socio-professional categories, living in small or medium-sized towns.
Television reception modes
Internet reception (IPTV) remains the leading mode of TV access, and continues to increase among TV-equipped households (69.1%, +3.3 points in one year), driven in particular by fiber reception, which now concerns almost half of TV-equipped households (48.3%, +6.3 points in one year). Conversely, access to DTT continues its downward trend (40.1%, -2.3 points over one year). While DTT-only TV reception still concerns 18.4% of TV-equippedhouseholds, for the first time this half-year, no French region has a majority of households using DTT reception.
Connected TV equipment and usage
Internet-connected TV equipment stabilized in the second half of 2023, accounting for 85.9% of TV-equipped households (+1.2 points in one year). The TV set-top box from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) remains the primary method of connecting the TV set (83.7% of connected TV-equipped households), however the connected Smart TV is now used by more than half of connected TV-equipped households (53.2%, +4.2 points in one year).
Linear TV viewing remains the most common use of a connected TV for all age categories, with a tendency among the under-35s to combine different practices (online gaming, SVOD services and music applications are also at high levels). Conversely , the consumption of live TV programs by people over 50 far outstrips other uses of connected TV ( replay programs , on-demand services, etc.).
The UHD/4Kformat remains better known than the HDR format (80% of French people aged 15 and over vs. 42%). While some 61% of those aware of each format take its availability into account when buying a new TV set, 29% do not watch UHD/4K content, and 23% HDR.
Radio
Almost the entire population owns at least one device for listening to the radio (99%), but is more equipped with multimedia terminals (97%, stable) than dedicated radio devices (90%, -1.3 points over one year).
Although equipment with DAB+-compatible devices remains stable among individuals aged 13 and over (24.5%), an increasing number of those equipped cite equipment receiving DAB+ as one of the three most frequently used devices for listening to the radio (+6.1 points compared with 2022).
