As an Internet access holder, you may receive a warning from the French regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication (Arcom) for making a work available on the Internet via a peer-to-peer network, if it is protected by copyright.

The peer-to-peer (P2P) scheme enables several computers to communicate with each other over a network, sharing objects such as files. To use such a scheme, specific software (e.g. BitTorrent, uTorrent, eMule, Shareaza, etc.) is required to share files.

Depending on its configuration, this type of software can automatically make downloaded files available. If you only use file-sharing software for downloading or making copyrighted works available, we recommend that you uninstall it.

The procedures for uninstalling software come under the control of the operating scheme and version installed on your computer. The most common operating schemes installed on personal computers are Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Example of uninstalling software under Windows.

Step 1: Determine which version of Windows your computer is running on

  • open the Start menu ;
  • in the "Search for programs and files" field of the menu, enter "winver" (for "Windows Version"), then press "Enter" on your keyboard;
  • an "About Windows" window appears on your screen. It tells you the version of your operating scheme;
  • shut down the window by clicking on OK.

Step 2: Depending on your Windows version, choose the appropriate proceedings from the following suggestions

  • Windows 8: in the "Search" field, type "Programs" > Settings > Add or remove programs > Select the program you wish to uninstall, then click "Uninstall" and follow the instructions.
  • Windows 10: in the "Start" menu, select "Settings" > Scheme > Applications and Features > Select the program to be uninstalled, then click "Uninstall" and follow the instructions.
  • Windows 11: in the "Start" menu, select "Settings" > "Applications" > "Applications and Features" > Select the program to be uninstalled, then click on "Uninstall" and follow the instructions.

If your version of Windows is not listed here, please browse the help supplied with your operating scheme.

If no uninstaller has been supplied with the software, the proceedings are as follows:

Step 1: Open the "Applications" folder and find the program you wish to uninstall;

Step 2: drag the software icon to the recycle garbage can;

Step 3: empty the recycle garbage can to delete the files permanently (right-click on the recycle garbage can, select "empty recycle garbage can" and confirm).

Linux installation procedures come under the control of the Linux distribution you are using. Use the corresponding package manager.
