Understand everything about the speaking time rules for the 2024 European elections.
In the audiovisual media, the election period starts on April 15, 2024 (8 weeks before the elections).
As of this date, TV and radio stations must count the speaking time of European election candidates and their supporters.
As France is a single electoral constituency, TV and radio stations must ensure that candidate lists and their supporters have fair representation and access to airtime.
To respect the principle of fairness, Arcom can take into account :
The results obtained in the last election.
Opinion polls.
The contribution of each list of candidates and their supporters to the electoral debate.
When a channel gives the floor to a national of another Member State, his or her contributions are taken into account if he or she is a candidate in France or if his or her contributions express support for a list of candidates in France.
Is there a period of strict equality of speaking time? No.
The period of strict equality of speaking time applies only during the presidential election, for a limited time.
New for these elections: Arcom has issued recommendations for online platforms.
What's at stake? To fight the risks of online disinformation during the election period, while taking into account the specificities of French electoral law.
