Every year, television and radio stations produce and show messages on their airwaves as of July 14th and for a week to promote the diversity of French society and social cohesion.

This July 14, 2023 marks the eleventh edition of the "Nous sommes la France" campaign, launched at the instigation of Arcom and relayed at prime time by TV channels and radio stations.

Arcom is mandated by law to enforce a fair epresentation of French society in the audiovisual media. The Authority's mission is to ensure "[...] that the diversity of French society is represented in the programs of audiovisuel communication services, and that this representation is free from prejudice."

Each year, Arcom reports to Parliament on the actions of television and radio service editors in terms of the epresentation of French society and the fight agains discrimination, as well as the actions it has taken.

Arcom published its report on the epresentation of French society in the audiovisual media on Thursday July 13. Find below the main findings of the report.

Perceived origin

People perceived as "non-white" were represented on television to the tune of 15% in 2022 (versus 14% in 2021). Their presence on all-news channels is still particularly low (9%).

Representation of women

The proportion of women expressing themselves on-screen has barely increased over the years (39% of those perceived as expressing themselves on-screen). Their proportion is higher on the historical channels (42%).

Representation of disability

For the first time ever, the representation of people with disabilities reached the symbolic 1% mark, a minor increase compared to the number of people with disabilities in France. Disabled people are mostly represented in drama (71%).

Representation by age

The underrepresentation of older and younger people persists in 2022: the over-65s represent 6% of the indexed population, even though they constitute the largest age segment in France (21%). Youngersters account for only 10% (24% of the French population).
