The Arcom study looks at developments with regard to audience rates for drama serie on television in France, Germany, Spain and the UK, and provides a better understanding of recent dynamics between linear and non-linear players.

The Arcom study was presented at the Festival de la fiction in La Rochelle, on Thursday September 15, by Carole Bienaimé Besse, Arcom advisor, chair of the "Education, audience protection and social cohesion in audiovisual and digital media" working group and vice-chair of the "Audiovisual, cinematic and musical creation and production" working group.

Study framework

Drama serie has always played a central role in the schedules and investments of TV channels.More recently, series have contributed to the rapid development of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services, occupying an important place in their catalogs, and a strong weight in their consumption.

The audience figures commented on in this document (available for downloading below) are based on data acquired from Glance, Médiamétrie's international department, which aggregates television audience data worldwide through partnerships with local audience measurement institutes.

The countries selected for this study, in addition to France, are Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK (for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2021). These countries were chosen for their common characteristics in terms of TV consumption (in particular individual listening time), national drama supplies and the structure of the audiovisual landscape (free-to-air channels, pay-TV, public or private).
