Arcom welcomes today's entry into force of most of the provisions of the European Media Freedom Act(EMFA), an innovative European scheme for the regulation of audiovisual and digital media.

This regulation aims to preserve an independent and plurality media ecosystem, offering European citizens reliable and varied sources of information to enable them to participate in an informed way in democratic and social debate.

The MediaBoard, which brings together regulators from EU member states, will play an important role in its implementation. In particular, its members will assess the impact of media concentration projects on plurality in the Union. They will also act in a coordinated way to respond to risks of interference from third countries, or to ensure that very large online platforms take appropriate precautions in moderating media content.

National law must be adapted to enable full implementation of the regulation in France. With this in mind, the French government has recently referred to Arcom the draft legislation inspired by the work of the Etats généraux de l'information, which will make the necessary adjustments. It will issue its opinion in a few weeks' time, and is summoning all its hopes for rapid adoption of the draft legislation.

Arcom will thus be working to enforce the EMFA, both at national level, with regard to the competences that may be entrusted to it by the law, and at European Union level within the Media Committee.
