The Pôle numérique Arcep - Arcom, created in 2020, aims to deepen the technical, economic and environmental analyses of digital markets, and to support the two regulators in the implementation of their missions in the digital field.
One of the Pôle Arcep - Arcom's products is its digital usage reference system. Its aim is to provide the general public with common reference data on digital usage. By aggregating data from a variety of established sources, it provides centralized figures on fixed and mobile network rollouts, Internet access, household equipment, Internet and audiovisual usage, and the environmental footprint of digital technology.
This fifth edition incorporates new themes such as time spent on screens and users' appreciation of this time spent, people's perception of artificial intelligence as a threat or an opportunity, and the latest trends in audio and video consumption, including on social networks and video-sharing platforms. On the environmental front, in addition to indicators on the environmental footprint of data center operators, terminal manufacturers and electronic communications operators, and an analysis of the power consumption of set-top boxes and TV boxes, this year's benchmark takes a closer look at the individual ownership time of smartphones and the power consumption of TV sets. It also presents for the first time a precise assessment of the environmental impact of audiovisual uses (consumption of linear or catch-up TV, video-on-demand, video-sharing platforms, terrestrial or online radio, and audio streaming ).
