"Let's put an end to prejudice about obesity", Arcom partners World Obesity Days
Summary
A disease recognised by the World Health Organisation, more than 10 million people in France today suffer from obesity and its associated pathologies. Arcom, a partner of the "World Obesity Days" from Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 March 2025, is fulfilling its role of informing and raising awareness in the audiovisual sector of this major public health problem.
Overweight and obesity: key facts and figures
What are overweight and obesity?
Overweight and obesity are defined as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that presents a health risk. A person is considered overweight if their body mass index (BMI) is over 25 and obese if it is over 30.
How many French people are affected?
In France, one adult in two and almost one child in five is overweight or obese.
This disease affects 17% of the French population, i.e. almost 10 million people who suffer from obesity alone.
According to forecasts by the World Health Organisation, obesity is expected to affect 29% of the French population by 2030.
What are the risks?
People who are overweight or obese are at greater risk of developing chronic diseases such as :
- cardiovascular disease ;
- diabetes
- musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoarthritis; and
- certain cancers.
As well as physical complications, obesity can also be a source of psychological problems. Overweight people sometimes suffer from low self-esteem and discrimination.
Arcom mobilises the audiovisual media
Encouraging good behaviour, broadcasting programmes promoting a healthy lifestyle, informing the general public and proposing solutions - these are the objectives of the World Obesity Days, for which Arcom has been one of the most committed partners every year since 2010.
The World Anti-Obesity Days are an opportunity to raise awareness among the general public of the many risks associated with this disease, and to propose practical solutions that can be implemented to combat it (healthy and sustainable eating, regular physical activity, etc.).
Arcom takes part in the Estates General on Obesity 2025
On Monday 3 March 2025, Arcom and its advisor Bénédicte Lesage, chair of the working group on "Media education, ecological transition and public health", took part in the first "Etats Généraux de l'Obésité 2025" at the Ministry of Health, organised by the Collectif National des Associations d'Obèses (CNAO).

Food charter commitments for programmes and advertising
The Arcom Charter, which aims to promote healthy diets and behaviours in audiovisual programmes, digital content and commercial communications, includes new voluntary players (digital platforms, the fast food sector, representatives of influencers and content creators, etc.) to step up the fight against overweight and obesity.
The 2025 campaign of the National Collective of Obese People's Associations (CNAO)
The Collectif National des Associations d'Obèses (CNAO) is accredited by the French Ministry of Health, EASO (European Association for the Study of Obesity) and CAF America (quality label - international certification).
The audiovisual media broadcast visuals, a logo and a video produced by the CNAO and sent to them by Arcom (example of a CNAO poster opposite).
For the 2025 edition, the CNAO has chosen to draw attention to 19 diseases associated with obesity. The "Behind obesity lie 19 diseases. Let's change the way we look at obesity", 19 colourful visuals of rounded bellies illustrate just as many of the pathologies associated with the disease. The aim of this approach is to arouse curiosity, encouraging passers-by to come closer and read the navel-high headline and discover an unknown reality.
