Arcom's action to improve the portrayal of disability in the media
The results of the diversity barometer of French society drawn up by the French regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication, Arcom, show that for several years now, people with disabilities have been severely underrepresented in television programs.
Arcom's action focuses on three areas:
- Program accessibility.
- Representation of the disabled on air.
- Professional integration of disabled people in audiovisual industry companies.
The "Jouons Ensemble" operation
Because it takes everyone's commitment to make parasports competitions fully-fledged and known to the general public, to change the way people look at disability by presenting it in a positive light, and to encourage people with disabilities to take up physical activity, Arcom, in partnership with the French Ministry of Sport, the State Secretariat for the Disabled and the French Paralympic and Sports Committee (CPSF), organized the "Jouons Ensemble" (Let's play together) operation in 2021, designed to showcase the inspiring careers of parasport athletes and demonstrate that sport is a formidable vector for transformation towards a more inclusive society.
Since the 2005 law on equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for disabled people, Arcom has gone one step further:
The rights of people with disabilities
Arcom ensures that TV channels make their programs accessible to people with hearing or visual impairments.
We also carry out awareness raising and incentive initiatives concerning the integration and training of people with disabilities in the audiovisual media, the development of accessibility quality and the qualitative improvement of on-air representation of disability and people with disabilities.
