Digital terrestrial radio: working together for DAB+!
Summary
Digital terrestrial radio or "DAB+" is gradually being rolled out across France. Every year, new transmitters are put into service to ensure ever-finer coverage of the country. By March 2024, 26 national radio stations will be available to over 60% of the French population. In all, more than 550 radio stations are already shown on DAB+.
Together for DAB+
Created in 2022 on the initiative of the Bureau de la Radio, Radio France and the Syndicat des radios indépendantes(SIRTI), in partnership with the French Ministry of culture, the "Ensemble pour le DAB+" association is launching its first communication campaign in favor of DAB+, as of Monday January 29, 2024.
Communicating on DAB+ responds to an essential awareness challenge: today, only 17% of French people know about DAB+, even though its diffusion is set to take significant steps forward in 2024.
The new campaign is based on :
- a spot shown on all radio stations belonging to the association, whether private, public, local or national,
- a poster campaign in the Paris metro, outdoors in the Île-de-France region, and in Nantes, Strasbourg, Lyon and Lille,
- A dedicated website.
What are the advantages of DAB+?
For listeners:
- Better sound quality
- Greater continuity of listeners on the move
- The arrival of new stations
- Enrichment of the audio stream with associated digital data (information of all kinds, song titles, logos and images such as record sleeves, etc.).
For radio stations :
- Pooling of broadcasting costs by grouping stations on the same frequency within a multiplex.
- Extended coverage in a context of FM band saturation
- Assurance of survival in the future digital ecosystem, in synergy with 5G mobile networks.
