Men's Football World Cup 2022: audiovisuel diffusion report
The twenty-second Men's World Cup took place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022. As an event of major importance, protected by the decree of December 22, 2004, and the subject of extensive media coverage and record audiences, the competition is a structuring element of the audiovisuel landscape.
Arcom's aim is to guarantee access to major sporting events for the widest possible audience, while ensuring the economic equilibrium of the channels awarded broadcasting rights. To this end, the Authority wished to draw up an assessment of the diffusion in France of the 2022 World Cup, by evaluating the audiovisual consumption practices of the French during the competition, the interest of the latter for the appeal of the broadcasters, as well as public satisfaction with the conditions of access to the matches.
Key findings include
- 61% of French people aged 15 and over watched at least one World Cup 2022match live or deferred broadcasting, mostly on their TV set, despite a notable share of digital devices, particularly among youngersters.
- 94% of viewers used a free access mode and 18% a paid service, while illegal use concerned 8% of the competition's audience.
- The growing enthusiasm generated by the French team's performance was of great benefit to the broadcasters, in terms of audiences, advertising revenues and contracts.
- Audiences were also generally satisfied with the event's broadcasting manager, giving it an average rating of 7.9/10.
