Semaine de la langue française et de la Francophonie: Arcom encourages TV and radio stations to promote the use of and respect for French
French is the 5th most widely spoken language in the world, with 321 million French speakers, and the 4th most widely used language on the Internet, according to the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).
The audiovisual media play a decisive role in the vitality of the French language. Through it, they transmit a vision of the world, cultures, values and shared histories. The aim of the Semaine de la langue française et de la Francophonie is to give the audiovisual media an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the French language.
Arcom is organizing French Language Week in the audiovisual media from March 18 to 26. This week is part of the global Francophonie Day and the Semaine de la langue française et de la Francophonie, organized on the initiative of the French Ministry of culture and communication since 1996. As part of this, Arcom is calling on TV and radio channels in mainland France and the French overseas territories to promote the French language, and to make provision for special programming on their channels, including the broadcast of dedicated spots and programs.
The 2023 "All Weather" edition
Every year, the Semaine de la langue française et de la Francophonie (French Language and Francophonie Week) brings together the world's 321 million French speakers.
For this 28th edition, sponsored by comedian and humorist Alex Lutz, winner of the Grand Prix Raymond Devos pour la langue française 2022, numerous events are being organized from March 18 to 26, throughout France and abroad.
Dictations, colloquia, fairs, improv matches... all forms have been chosen to celebrate the French language. On Wednesday March 22, middle-school students will take to the stage in the Salon des Maréchaux at the Ministry of Culture for an improvisation match on the theme of time and the ten words of this 2023 edition.
