Together, let's publicize parasport! Arcom launches "Jouons ensemble" operation from November 14 to 20
Why should we encourage media coverage of parasport?
Media coverage of parasport not only strengthens the presence of people with disabilities on the airwaves, it also changes the way people look at disability. It promotes an inclusive vision of sport, less perceived by the general public as a sphere that excludes people with disabilities.
By drawing on the expertise of people with disabilities, and in particular on the work of Arcom's disability editorial board, the media will be able to improve the quality and quantity of their coverage of parasport.
Organized by Arcom, in partnership with the French Ministry of Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the French Ministry for the Disabled and the French Paralympic and Sports Committee(CPSF), the second edition of the "Jouons ensemble" parasport media campaign runs from November 14 to 20, 2022.
Throughout the week, the media will be mobilizing to highlight the inspiring careers of parasport athletes and demonstrate that sport is a formidable vector for transformation towards a more inclusive society.

Visibility of parasport in the audiovisual media in 2021
Epresentation of French society
Arcom reports annually to Parliament on the actions of television and radio service editors in terms of the epresentation of French society and the fight agains discrimination, as well as the actions it has taken.
The epresentation of French society barometer is a measurement tool that provides an annual snapshot of the representation of diversity on TV screens. The results of the barometer also enable broadcasters, on a regular basis, to have a precise idea of the image they project of society, and thus to better feed their channels with diverse people and programs representative of social diversity, without doing so on an event-driven basis.
The portrayal of disability on television and radio
The representation of disability remains marginal: only 0.8% of the total individuals indexed in 2021 are disabled.
Never in previous waves of the barometer has this rate exceeded the symbolic 1% mark.
Such a result is particularly disappointing given that one of the two weeks indexed was marked by the Duoday operation. The human resources policies of audiovisual media companies, increasingly favorable to the inclusion of disabled people within their organizations, are not matched on screen.
Arcom's action
Improving the portrayal of disability and the accessibility of audiovisual programs is one of the core missions of the French regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication, Arcom, whose action in this area has grown over the years.
Arcom's role in the field of disability stems from the provisions of the law on freedom of communication. The on-air representation of disability is part of Arcom's broader mission to ensure the representation of diversity.
"[...] theAuthority contributes to actions in favor of social cohesion and the fight agains discrimination in the field of audiovisual communication. In particular, it ensures that audiovisual communication services reflect the diversity of French society, taking into account the nature of their programs [...] ".
Arcom's action is focused on three areas:
- Programaccessibility.
- Representation of the disabled on the airwaves.
- Professionalintegration of disabled people in audiovisual industry companies.
Each year, Arcom monitors TV channels' compliance with their accessibility obligations, and publishes a report on its website. The Authority is also raising awareness among broadcasters of the importance of quality accessibility, with the adoption of several charters and guides, which you can find below.
